Tips for Staying in a Hotel

If you have pet allergies, Do Not stay at a pet-friendly hotel!

I know this seems like common sense but people will not pay attention and book at a pet-friendly hotel. The next thing they know they are having a reaction to the pet dander and are complaining to the person working the front desk.

The housekeepers aren’t your personal maids!

Yes, they will make your bed if it’s not piled with clothes and other stuff. Most places will change the sheets once a week unless you ask for them to do it more often but the bed still needs to be clear. They are not allowed to touch your stuff. They will take out the trash that is in the trash cans, not the trash that you left everywhere. They will clean the bathroom sink as long as they can get to it without touching your stuff. Same goes for the toilet and tub/shower. They will not take the towels that are hanging up because they think you want to use them again. So if you want that towel to be taken, put it on the floor in the bathroom.

If you like to tip the housekeeper, it’s best to give a little each day. The housekeepers get moved around so you won’t have the same person every day of your stay. Leave the tip on the pillow or with a thank you note so the housekeepers know it’s for them. Money left elsewhere or without a note will not be touched unless you have checked out.

If the hotel serves a breakfast, please note the times.

Do not try to get breakfast early or wait until the last minute. There is a lot of cleanup after breakfast and the employee is trying to leave on time. They have to come in early to make that fresh coffee and breakfast for you. You can also tip the person that is attending the breakfast bar that morning.

If you put the Do Not Disturb sign on your door, the housekeeper will not enter your room.

Don’t get upset if you left the sign out by accident and you didn’t get your bed made, fresh towels or trash taken out. Housekeepers mark the rooms with DND (Do Not Disturb) and go on to take care of the rooms that want service. If you put the DND sign out but want towels, toilet paper and trash out there is another way to make that happen. Put your trash bag on the left or right of your door and call guest services to get what you need. The housekeeper will pick up your trash bag and leave a bag on the door of the stuff you ask for. Please include a trash bag or two to the list.

So, it’s 4 pm and you decide you want service! Well, it’s probably too late to get service. The housekeepers are about to leave or have left for the day. If you happen to get service, give the housekeeper a tip! Most have to go home and clean their own house or take care of their family. You just took that time away from them. The least you can do is give them 5 or 10 bucks!

If you only want full-service housekeeping on a specific day, time or both, tell the front desk when you check in. It should get noted on the housekeeper’s board so they won’t bother you. Once again, if the DND sign is on the door, they will not enter so make sure you have removed it.

If you are a light sleeper, bring earplugs!!

The person at the front desk can’t change the fact that there were people in the hall making some noise at 1 am. Just because you are grumpy from lack of sleep, don’t be nasty with the person at the front desk. You should have brought earplugs!

If you are going to be in the room during the morning hours and don’t want a lot of noise, make sure your room isn’t near the kitchen or hotel laundry. This can be a noisy area when the breakfast bar person is in the kitchen or housekeepers are getting ready to start their day.  It can also get noisy when the breakfast bar person is cleaning up and when the housekeepers are leaving for the day.

So you are taking your fur-baby or fur-babies with you.

Pay the deposit for your pet(s) and put the pet inside this room sign on the door. The housekeeper will not know you have a pet or pets in the room unless the sign is on the door. If you do not create your pet(s) and the sign isn’t on the door, the housekeeper will come in and your pet(s) might get out. This will not be the hotels’ fault!!

You forgot the crate and want your room cleaned. Easy fix to this is to put your pet in the bathroom or a bedroom with the pet inside sign on the door. Most hotels don’t allow the housekeeper to go into a room that a door is closed.

Always clean up after your pet. Yes, I am talking about picking up your dog’s poo!! People don’t want to accidentally step in your dog’s poo or have their child step it. Just be a responsible pet owner.

That’s the end of my tips for this post. I hope you enjoyed reading this post.

  4. Woah! I’m really enjoying the template/theme of this site.

It’s simple, yet effective. A lot of times it’s very difficult to get that “perfect balance” between user friendliness and
visual appearance. I must say you have done a superb job with this.
Also, the blog loads super quick for me on Firefox. Excellent Blog!
